The Slishman Traction Splint (STS) was developed by Dr. Sam Slishman at the University of New Mexico to address the operational challenges posed by older traction splint designs. The STS utilizes an innovative approach by positioning the traction mechanism at the patient’s hip, applying femur traction through the extension of pole segments. This method creates a pushing force on the ankle strap, rather than pulling from the foot, providing a range of advantages over traditional traction splints.
Key Benefits of the STS:
- Compact Design: The STS does not extend beyond the foot, ensuring it doesn’t obstruct ambulance doors or aircraft entry. It remains safely contained within the litter, basket, or board during extrication and hoisting, minimizing the risk of further injury to the patient.
- Rapid Application: With a four-step process, the STS can be applied in under 60 seconds, making it the fastest traction splint available. No poles to assemble and no transport delays.
- Compatible with Lower Leg Injuries: Unlike traditional traction splints, the STS is not contraindicated for lower leg injuries or amputations. The ankle strap can be repositioned proximal to the calf or patella, allowing continued femur traction.
- Lightweight and Compact: Weighing just 595 grams and measuring 58 cm x 8 cm, the STS is easy to store and transport. It can be strapped to jump bags or backpacks for convenience.
- One Size Fits All: The STS is designed to fit both adults and pediatric patients, eliminating the need for multiple splints. In cases where bilateral splinting is required, two STS units can be used.
- Easy Traction Adjustment: During transport, the traction mechanism is located at the patient’s hip, allowing for easy adjustments to ensure patient comfort.
- Radiolucent: The STS is radiolucent, meaning it does not interfere with patient imaging. The splint can remain in place through imaging and surgery without needing to be removed. The Slishman Traction Splint (STS) is a lightweight, versatile, and easy-to-use solution for effective femur fracture management, making it an essential tool for emergency medical responders and first aid teams.
